LIES I HAVE TOLD: BRUSH WITH GREATNESS #1

by Keef Rutledge on June 6, 2012

Fresh out of high school, I was asked by the KC Royals to try out for the team. Due to my packed schedule, the only time I could make it was at midnight on a Thursday. The only people who showed up were the pitcher, the coach, and Bo Jackson. Bo Jackson played catcher while the coach watched. The pitcher wound up and threw, and then I bashed Bo Jackson in the face with my bat. As the pitcher tried desperately to revive him and the coach screamed in my face, I paused to vomit and then walked off the field. I didn’t get the gig.

This inspirational story has the two elements that were lacking in every other inspirational story I’ve ever read: vomiting and complete defeat accepted without a fight. Nicely done.
